The Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee provides The Nathan Centre with scientific and medical expertise, perspectives, and advice.

 

Professor Wei Wang, MD, PhD, FFPH, FRSB, FRSM

Professor Wei Wang is a Medical Doctor. He is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (China) at ECU and Professor of Public Health in the School of Medical and Health Sciences (SMHS). He leads the Sub-optimal Health and Glycomics research group, within the SMHS and is the Sub-optimal Health Stream Lead in the Centre for Precision Health, an ECU strategic Research Centre. In addition to the role as Professor in the School of Medical and Health Sciences, he is also the Director of the Beijing Municipal Key Laboratory-Centre of Excellence on Clinical Epidemiology, Beijing, China. He is an exceptional mentor and role model to his rapidly growing team of scientists.

 

 

 

Dr Michael Gendy, MBBch, FRACGP

Dr Michael Gendy is a Medical Doctor and Co-Founder/Director of Jupiter Health and Medical Services, Western Australia’s leading GP group. He graduated with an MBBS from the University of Asyut, Egypt, in 2002. He then moved to Australia in 2008 and earned his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2010.  Dr Gendy has over 10 years’ experience in general practice. His special interests include Family Medicine, Skin Cancer, Chronic disease management, Cosmetics & procedures of aesthetic medicine, Aged care. He is a talented, ambitious, and caring doctor with excellent communication skills.

 

 

Clinical Professor Behrooz Akbarnia, MD

Dr Behrooz Akbarnia is a paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and one of the world’s foremost authorities on Early Onset Scoliosis. He is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Diego and Medical Director San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders La Jolla, California. Dr A (as he is affectionately known) created the San Diego Spine Fellowship Program, and founded both the San Diego Spine (SDSF) and the Growing Spine Foundations to support academic activities. Dr A is a kind, personable doctor with a deep commitment to improving the lives of his patients.

 

 

 

Andrea Lyon, RN, PhD candidate

Andrea is a Mental Health Nurse in the Youth Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital and is a Sessional Tutor at Curtin University (Health Instability, Complex Care and Bioscience). In addition, she is a committee member for the WA College of Mental Health Nurses. Andrea provides knowledge, understanding and strategic thinking of biopsychosocial issues impacting single-parent families and their children with rare diseases. Andrea Lyon is a PhD Candidate at the School of Medical and Health Sciences, ECU.

 

 

 

 

 

Dr Lois Balmer, Genetics

Lois is an Assistant Professor working in the higher education industry. Lois is skilled in Molecular Biology, Clinical Research, Life Sciences, Data Analysis, and Research. In addition, Lois lectures at ECU, teaching Medical genetics, Human molecular genetics, and Advanced Biomedical Techniques.

 

 

 

 

 

Dr Ivan Li, MD, Clinical Medicine and Genetics

Dr Ivan Li is a Medical Doctor and Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Medical and Health Sciences, within the Sub-optimal Health and Glycomics research group. His research focus includes genetics, glycomics, and chronic disease.

Dr Zheng Guo, MD, PhD candidate, Clinical Medicine

Dr Zheng Guo is a Medical Doctor and a PhD Candidate at the School of Medical and Health Sciences, ECU. Zheng applies critical thinking to effectively address research gaps and has numerous scientific publications.
